Rooms & Casitas

Our property offers a range of housing options, each with volcano and lake views and top quality mattresses and bedding and decorated with the work of local artisans.  Each is unique. Every room on the property features a lake and volcano view.

Main House, Casa Paloma

Four gorgeous bedrooms (Estrella, Pajaro, Bambu and Tuk Tuk) decorated with the work of local artisans.  Each room has its own private bath, suitable for housing two students each. Top quality queen and single mattresses, top quality 100% cotton bedding, down pillows, duvets.  Each room has its own balcony or private patio and lake views.

Casa Paloma

Estrella (Star)

The largest bedroom on the property—sits on the second floor, overlooking the lake. The queen bed is higher than an average bed, with pull-out steps on each side of the bed.  We constructed it this way to give guests the best possible volcano view.  There’s also a skylight over the bed for taking in the stars,  a fireplace, a balcony whose railings are made from coffee wood.  A full wall of windows overlooks the lake.

Like every room on the property, Estrella is decorated with the work of local artisans. This one includes antique furnishings, a giant wooden bull head mask over the fireplace, antique chest, and a highly detailed antique replica of a church that serves double duty for storing your possessions. The high desk, facing the lake, was made from a repurposed antique ironing board.

Estrella’s private bathroom features a deep soaking tub overlooking the lake—particularly soothing, with candles lit, when the stars are out—that opens onto an outdoor patio with a hammock, an outdoor shower and seating.  The room shares an outdoor fireplace with the inhabitant(s) of Pajaro.

Estrella can also house a second single bed, when two guests share. Guests considering this room should be advised there are no curtains—not a privacy issue, but the sun will greet you.

Capacity: 1 or 2 guests.

Casa Paloma

Pajaro (Bird)

This magical room at the very top level of the main Villa –accessed by a set of circular stairs--features a skylight, built-in avocado wood bench, antique carved chest, and a large balcony with seating for two. Because Pajaro is nestled in among the trees (but with an unimpeded lake and volcano view), guests who stay in this room will wake to birdsong.

Pajaro has a private bathroom, accessed by circular stairs, skylights, huge verandah overlooking the lake, and a desk and hand-made avocado wood bench.

This room can house one or two double beds. No curtains.  Lots of morning sun.

Capacity: 1 or 2 guests.

Casa Paloma

Tuk Tuk

(the name for the small motorized vehicles that transport people into town.)

This lovely ground-floor room was named for a large original art work by a local painter featuring the small motorized vehicles known as tuk tuks that transport people into town. The room has a large built-in desk and an abundance of hand-crafted art.

The room faces a wall of windows looking out to a private patio with hanging basket chair and built in bench seating.  Patio leads to the bathroom, with more great views.

Tuk Tuk can house one or two queen beds when desired. This is the one room on the property where cell phone service is poor, but you can connect with no problem on the private patio just outside.

This room has curtains to block the morning sun. Tuk tuk is the one room on the property with poor wifi access, but wifi is available on the patio right outside.

Capacity: 1 or 2 guests.

Casa Paloma

Bambu

This is a small, simple room with one queen bed and a very simple private bathroom, a small desk and lake view. Bambu is a good choice for a person looking for the most economical option, or to house one or two retreat leaders. When needed, we can add an inflatable mattress.

Capacity: 1 or 2 guests.

The Casitas

Two of our casitas are free-standing little bungalows, each with their own private bath.  One of the casitas features two bedrooms—upper and lower—and shares an organic bathroom.

The Casitas

Azul (Blue)

With a queen bed suitable for a single guest or couple, sits right at the water’s edge.  Sleep with the French doors open and you’ll hear the water lapping on the shore and wake to the birds. Azul has its own private veranda and shares an organic bathroom/shower with the casita below, Piedra.

This room has curtains to block the morning sun when desired.

Capacity: 1 guest (or a couple).

The Casitas

Piedra (Stone)

Directly below Azul, this unique room is built all of local stone, with hand-carved stone heads built into the walls. With a queen bed, the room is suitable for a single traveler or couple. The handmade double bamboo doors open directly to your private beach for early morning or late night swims, or kayaking.

The Casitas

At Home in the World

Named for a memoir written by the owner/founder of Casa Paloma, this casita features one queen bed or two singles, along with a handmade avocado wood desk and a veranda with coffee wood railings looking out to the garden, lake and volcano. Decorated with local textiles and masks, this casita has its own private bathroom/shower with hand painted ceramic sink from a local pottery and a private outdoor writing table.

The Casitas

Count the Ways

Named for the most recent novel by the owner/founder of Casa Paloma, this casita has a particularly cozy, rustic feel, with ship-style windows that open by pulley, an antique hand-carved armoire, a desk and hand-painted chair overlooking lake and volcano, and hand carved wooden owls made by a local craftsman gracing the ceiling beams. This casita—with queen bed suitable for a solo guest or a couple— has its own private bathroom/shower with volcano view.

Casa Una

Casa Una Two (above) & Casa Una One (below)

This two-story house, designed by the owner’s architect daughter-in-law from Los Angeles and named for her newborn daughter, melds modern style with traditional elements of gorgeous adobe and stone walls, interior garden, ceramic tile floors, and thatch roof.

The house includes two stunning bedrooms, Casa Una One (photos below), suitable for one or two guests, or a couple, and Casa Una Two (photos above), suitable for a single guest or a couple. Each of the two bedrooms features high ceilings, a private lake and volcano view verandah, and handmade furniture from a local craftsman. Each of the two bedrooms has its own gorgeous bathroom.

The bathroom for Casa Una one deserves its own description.  This one includes a private outdoor shower, private garden, and a 7-person jacuzzi, surrounded by a hand-built stone wall covered with plants and flowers.  The jacuzzi has a separate entrance that allows other retreat guests to use it, if retreat leader chooses.

Casa Una has its own gorgeous full kitchen, set up with coffee maker, blender, refrigerator and all else, a living room with working fireplace, a library with cozy reading nook, and a huge verandah with dining table and a tree covered in orchids.  Because it sits at the very top of the property, the views are astounding. But be prepared to climb some steps—one hundred of them.

The Bird Nest

Private Villa

The most private of our villas, The Bird Nest overlooks the lake and volcano with its own custom kitchen, verandah, private garden/dining area, spectacular soaking tub under an outdoor palapa.  Built with highest quality mahogany and conacaste wood, custom stonework, bedding and attention to detail, this little house would be the ideal destination for a romantic getaway or  honeymoon.  Enjoy our yoga platform, swimming dock, sauna and matchless gardens.  Personal chef and massage available.

Additional Sleeping Space Options

The Nest & The Library

Some retreat leaders also choose to house one guest in a curtained-off section of the gathering room in the main house, Casa Paloma, known as The Nest.  It’s small, but features an incredible lake and volcano view, and makes great sense for a budget-minded guest or a scholarship student.

Similarly, there is an optional third sleeping space at Casa Una in the room known as The Library. Like The Nest, this sleeping space can be curtained off from the main atrium with more great lake views, can share the bathroom of Casa Una 2, and provides a great alternative for a guest on a budget.

Capacity with The Nest and The Library option:  2 more guests.
